Be Careful What You Wish For!

Be Careful What You Wish For!
Many decades ago we drove past this crowded row of cottages when they were being built on the narrow strip between the highway and the sea. Even before they were finished they completely blocked the public view.

We talked about the possibility that our beautiful shore would become like the miles of tightly packed beach houses on the east coast, where you drive along 100 ft. away from the ocean without getting a single glimpse of the water. I made a fervent silent wish that these California houses would fall into the sea.

And five out of twelve have.

Interesting story!

I hope nowadays such locations would be protected by tighter planning restrictions. I too hate how the coastline has been ruined by overdevelopment

Ooops! Sadly, it seems inappropriate developments are common in most places as a result of stupidity (or worse). Thankfully it isn't (yet?) a problem in my area.

And what happened to those five? Were they left there at the bottom or did someone have the nerve to make the owners/insurance/whoever clean up?

I dunno. I think the houses may have been dismantled before they went over the edge... I wouldn't want that job. Or the ocean may have just swept in and swept out.
You can still see the vast amount of concrete that was poured to try to stop the earth movement.

I will never understand why people think they can build in such a place, so close to the cliff edge and then expect nothing to happen. They got what they deserved. Maybe the rest will soon follow the ones that already got destroyed. I know I wouldn't want to live in one of those houses, no matter how outstanding the view!

it's a great shot showing a less-than-great situation.

I have to say as soon as I saw the photo, I was thinking ~ they are precariously placed. A lovely spot thought, you can appreciate why people would love to look out on that view
