High Sierra: Glacier Clues

High Sierra: Glacier Clues
This is sunny California, after all. Most of the remaining Sierra glaciers are tiny, static, barely moving. But looking down into this canyon you know immediately there's a big happy working glacier somewhere above.

The dark blue lake in the foreground is an "ordinary" high mountain lake. The two lakes behind it are filled with fine, suspended silt, called glacial flour. It is late summer and the glacier somewhere up the canyon is grinding so well that its lakes are losing their lovely robin's egg blue color and turning gray.

Big Pine Creek Canyon: First Lake, Second Lake, Brainard Lake.

This looks pristine, and so beautiful.

My youngest son has stayed several times in the mountain resorts of Ca, he prefers to ski rather than sunbathe, but I guess not here...

Spectacular scene. You must have been very high to get a perspective like this. Beautiful difference in color, too, between the lakes, and that wonderful color that glacial lakes have....
