"up down, over"

"up down, over"
This is Owens Valley, west of Death Valley, photographed from White Mountain and showing the Sierra Crest in the distance.

These are the two highest ranges and the deepest valley of what geomorphologists call the Basin and Range Province. Old California was just on the other side of the mountains in the distance.

For the pioneers coming west in 1850, there were more than 300 miles of rugged, sparse desert country in what is now the state of Nevada. Many mountain ranges, many desert valleys, all trending north and south. Potentially hostile Indians to the north, a frightening unknown desert to the south. Few experienced guides, no maps. And a deep rooted, very American need to go west. So unless there was an obvious way around, they simply took their heavy wagons and their women and children "up, down and over."

PS: To this day there are no roads which will take you across the Sierra peaks that you see in this photo, to the main part of California.

Don Barrett (aka DBs travels), Peter Van Der Houwen, Pam J, Prairie Rambler and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

Captures the rugged beauty and the inhospitable terrain that had to be crossed to get to the promised land of California.
