Wind Spider (Solifuge)

Wind Spider (Solifuge)
Very sharp eyes, very sharp jaws, though they don't often bite people.
She is posing, not on fabric, but on a very pretty rock.

I had to meet several of her relatives before it dawned on me why the old timers called her a wind spider. I believe it's because she must get OUT of the wind when it begins to blow seriously. If you have your bed or tarp on the ground when the wind and dust begin to blow, she may use it for shelter.

Stovepipe Wells, Death Valley, California.

Wonderful! It's amazing how many people have never seen one of these, and when they do, scream and run off!

I kept one of these as a pet for a while when I was a youngster. Named it Arnold.
Loved to munch grasshoppers. Very nice pic.
