From film print: Mtutuzel Dudu Pukwana and I duetting at the old Jazz Cafe: Stoke Newington. 1988-9? Looks like I was working quite hard! . I was introduced to Dudu by John Stevens and one of my most deeply pleasurable musical memories is working as a trio with both John and Dudu at the original 'Arts Theatre Club' in London. in '79-'80. John Stevens was a most amazing Musician who had an incalcuable influence on many young players during his (all too short) life. Always inclusive , never exclusive he encouraged us to freely swap genres whilst retaining the 'Improvised' ethic which he truly embodied in his life and playing. Like Dudu, another 'Master'. With 'ZILA' mid-80's

Oh, that.. CD; Page 13 - Songs for Drella Sire Records . Vinyl issue www.flickr.com/photos/katiadesmet/5970209639/ . A little about MetalMachineMusic . Gamechanger. Jeremy Darby first brought MMM round to my Herne Bay flat in 1976. I had just got hold of Brian Eno's 'Discreet Music' and used to play it at 16rpm (vinyl) half speed, to make it last longer. It was only possible, (because of the neighbours), to listen to MMM quietly, (not how you are *supposed to hear it), and I realised, eyes closed and laying down, that it sounded to me like NYC was just humming outside my window in Kent. Had an idea. I had two prehistoric record decks one of which didn't work very well and I was able to get both records to play, (through different amplifiers), at the same time. 'Discreet Music' at 16rpm and MMM with the volume turned down, although, I occasionally varied the levels. Thanks Sensei. "Nihilism spawns Inspiration"?

With John Abercrombie at his apt. NYC (early1988)... We were both given, Casio PG380 Guitars ... Luckyluckylucky... -- My (apparently rare) white PG 380 & (black) 510 still work great!! I still have all the factory programming software, (for AtariST), given to me by Casio originally for the 64 voice flash RAM that inserts into the back of the Guitar... A marvel of engineering... Locking nut, fine tuners, battey powered.

John Zorn: Winter 1981 That incomparable electric Guitarist and improviser Fred Frith just answered humorously on a note I sent him on some esoteric social networking site today, (not *that one). It reminded me of this photograph I took and my first time in NYC, a city where I have since spent a of of time. I have only met the great American composer J.Z. once. I went to his apartment, (then in Alphabet City, lower Manhattan) and I remember clearly being staggered by the sheer number of vinyl records stacked on shelves around the walls floor to ceiling, groaning with the weight of just about every single genre of music. An urbane and very intelligent individual; I spent a nice couple of hours and this was taken on our way out into the city evening. Snow flurries and all. The film is grainy, low light.

Arthur Kitchener & Lars Frederiksen

REGGAE GOT SOUL People gawked from windows when we walked Lars to Westbrook beach for some hardcore ice-cream. I have produced and recorded my old mate of well over 30 years, (gulp); Arthur K's last three solo albums. The current release (available Nov 2011 on Ace records) we finished and it was mastered last month. Its seems to be stirring the music waters already. Billy Bragg is a fan. And a lot of people in the USA it seems. Being the Ska, Punk and Blues legend that Arthur is; (playing Bass alongside night tripper 'Dr. John', with the seminal 'Balham Alligators', intensely controversial 'The Last Resort' and his own band, Ska classisists, 'The Originals'), another of his fans, Lars Frederiksen, from the hugely successful US punk band RANCID flew in from Los Angeles to Margate to work on a couple of songs with his hero. He was genuinely thrilled to be on the 'Belmont Avenue' record. Arthur is cited as a big influence on Lars' own work. Dion DiMucci comments regularly about Arthur's songwriting, recently mentioning him in a BBC radio interview; thats truly high praise indeed... Arthur just got this note today, so he sent it to me to post! FROM : Scott Kempner NYC NY. Hey Arthur - Been thoroughly digging the cd. It took awhile for the songs to really sink in, which, for me, was due to the stripped down arrangements slowly revealing themselves, and the nuances in the songs. But, they arrived. I really dig the straightforward lyrics here. Very strong echo of the early-60's NYC Folk scene - just man, guitar and something on your mind. The melodies are all strong & carry the stories real well. It's a very conversational record, which is some thing i really like, and is a tough trick to pull off, but you've done so, mi amigo. It's all very moving, and pitched well between compassion and anger, without being hectoring or self-righteous. Really great job. First faves: BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON, & the title track. Oh, and NIGHTINGALE, too. Keep 'em comin'!. And, congratulations on the deal with Ace. Arthur Kitchener - The Hobo Manifesto : Ace Records. Nov 2011 from stores and online

"Seen on the Green '89"; Found on a wall in Carol Grimes' house! I compered all 3 years of this great free open air festival. That particular year I was also working with Dallas Trumpet player, Dennis Gonzales band; (With Paul Rogers, Bass & Mark Sanders, Drums). I remember we managed to make it back just in time for my first announcement from the stage by pulling an overnighter from the Lubijana Festival the night before, exciting stuff...

HANS-JOACHIM RODELIUS -- & -- HANS-JOACHIM IRMLER ... Gods of the Electronic age... -- The two Hans-Joachims came to see the installation in Berlin. My ' b i g b i g s p a c e s ' SCUBA diving films installation is also on a mini-DVD copies of which were grabbed by all! Part of the ' soundofcities ' collaborative work. -- A huge privilige to meet some of the (immensely influential) German Electronic Music giants. Dieter Mobius , Paulo Chagas and a few other major Electronic composers came too. I stayed the weekend and found their close community inclusive, extremely polite and good natured during my stay in Berlin. (They all spoke English together whenever I was present, so made sure I felt included).. HJ Irmler has since suggested we collaborate and I am hoping to work in the FAUST studio with him in the near future...

Cheezy smiles a speciality... Blowing loud, wild and crazy for the afternoon with big fun Danny Gottleib at his lock up in Midtown NYC; a really big loft, (when you could still get them), absolutely packed with drum kits stacked in towers round the walls. He hadn't long left the Metheny Band and was truly zoning. Wish I had recorded this blow, amongst others.... Jeremy Darby , one of my oldest friends in the world introduced us @ S.I.R. Earl stayed in London with us for six weeks, on his way to explore his roots in Africa, .. Earl was one of the saxophonists on the exquisite, historic recording of ' In a Silent Way '. (Side 2 of an album I was given on my 21st birthday; Joe Zawinul - Zawinul ). I still have it... We managed to get him a few gigs whilst he was here. I remember one cracking night with Pete Thomas esp. Here the band is Myself, Earl Turbinton, Cliff Venner, (Drs.) and Mervyn Africa (Pno.)
