The Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles, form a 130 miles arc running from north to south off the north-western coast of Scotland and look out on their western side to the Atlantic Ocean.
The islands are part of the Hebrides, separated from the Scottish mainland and from the Inner Hebrides by the Minch, the Little Minch and the Sea of the Hebrides.
