Terracotta Kylix: Band Cup in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2011

Terracotta Kylix: Band Cup in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2011
Terracotta kylix: band-cup (drinking cup)

Period: Archaic

Date: ca. 540 B.C.

Culture: Greek, Attic

Medium: Terracotta; black-figure

Classification: Vases

Credit Line: Rogers Fund, 1987

Accession Number: 1987.11.4a–d

Description: Obverse, woman and egg-laying goose, between geese
Reverse, riders

The vignette of a woman among geese was surely observed by the painter firsthand. It is impossible for us to know, however, whether the scene alludes to a story—such as a goose that lays golden eggs—or simply presents a woman at home in contrast to the men riding out on horseback depicted on the other side.
