For SparkyLeigh: At your request. We was on Vancouver Island in 1996. Our whale watching tour was on September 12. We did it with the "R&S Tours" Tofino, weigh west marine resort. Our guide called this whale (whose fluke you see in the picture) "Elvis". We also saw sea-lions and cormorants(?) on this tour. Who did guide us? Was it you? I really don`t remember.
The view from the port gave us the swimming house in the next picture (with solar cells!). On Radar Hill we saw a beautiful sundown. In Combs we saw goats on the roof of a store. Do you know all these things Sparky?

Well Hardy you have answered more than all the questions I had asked you about your trip there...There is a very good chance I WAS your tour operator!! I drove that Boston Whaler tour boat for R&S that year. Elvis is still around some years and is a Pacific Gray Whale as is the one I posted today. If I had a `Gold Patron` status I would post a picture of me driving that very boat full of tourists and maybe you would recognize me better. There was only one other driver for that boat then so it is a 50/50 chance I was your guide! Thanks Hardy!!!

Wohles robustes haben Sie mehr beantwortet, als alle Fragen ich Sie gefragt hatten, daß über Ihre Reise es... dort eine sehr gute Wahrscheinlichkeit gibt, die ich Ihr Touroperator! WAR! Ich fuhr daß Boston Whaler Tourboot für R&S, das Jahr. Elvis ist noch um einige Jahre und ist ein pazifischer grauer Wal, wie der, den ich heute bekanntgab. Wenn ich einen ` Goldgönner` Status hatte, den ich eine Abbildung von mir dieses Boot voll der Touristen sehr fahrend bekanntgeben würde und möglicherweise würden Sie mich besser erkennen. Es gab nur einen anderen Treiber für dieses Boot dann, also ist es eine 50/50 Wahrscheinlichkeit, die ich Ihr Führer war! Dank Robust!!!

Just for your information Hardy, I live on Vancouver Island, and the goats still graze on the roof of the Coombes market. Actually, it`s the only interesting thing in Coombes.

Yep Elvis turned out to be a female and has given birth to at least one baby. Gray whales can give birth every other year; gestation is 12 to 13 months. Mom will breast-feed her calf for up to a year; her milk will be over 50% fat--the calf gains 90 kilograms (200 lbs.) per day during the first 6 months! (Human breast milk is about 2 1/2% fat content)
Mom & calf will stay near each other for several years or more.
You asked how old the gray whale could live. Most live about 35 to 50 years but some have been documented at over 80 years of age. As with most creatures, the 1st year is most critical for survival. The biggest threats to whales are humans, either from pollutants or hunting. There used to be 3 migrations of gray whales in the world, two were hunted to extinction and only this one Elvis travels on still exists. It too was nearly destroyed by the massive killing ships. In fact the whalers quite hunting them because they could not find anymore...only a few hundred survived to grow back into the population we have today which is nearly 26,000 animals. I the early 80’s the population was about 7,000! Their numbers have stabilized now though.

Die größten Drohungen zu den Walen sind Menschen, entweder von den Verschmutzungsstoffen oder von der Jagd. Es verwendete, 3 Migrationen der grauen Wale in der Welt zu geben, wurden zwei zur Löschung gejagt und nur dieses ein Elvis Spielräume an besteht noch. Es auch wurde fast durch die massiven Tötungschiffe zerstört. Tatsächlich die whalers durchaus Jagd sie, weil sie nicht... nur einige hundert mehr finden konnten überlebt, um zurück in die Bevölkerung zu wachsen, die wir heute haben, die fast 26.000 Tiere ist. I das frühe 80?s die Bevölkerung war ungefähr 7.000! Ihre Zahlen haben jetzt zwar stabilisiert.

Amazing! Great catch! I`ve only been whale watching once, years ago, in California. Didn`t get nearly this close. :o)
