Great balls of fire.... by Carabosse

Great balls of fire.... by Carabosse
X To celebrate the start of the Clipper round the world race Hull City council also set up the Freedom Festival that lasted the whole weekend. It included lots of music, theatre and dance. The highlight for me was the lighting up literally of Hull`s old fruit market district by a French instillation art group called Carabosse. They have performed round the world, their medium is fire. The whole of the old town was turned into a blazing series of large metal sculptures that they set ablaze. Some like this one were standing on the ground others hung from pylons. It is impossible for a single shot to capture the full sense of this but it transformed the old town into a magical world of fire sparks and shadows. The council had turned all the street lights off, so the effect was stunning. Over 150,000 people attended the festival and it was one of the best weekends I have experienced in Hull. Hull has the reputation in England as being a bit of a desert but this was city coming together with a sense of community good humour and pride.
If you ever get chance to see Carabosse perform do not miss it they are incredible.
