This Wildcat was lost when its engine quit while taking off from USS Sable in December 1944. It was recently recovered and is now owned by the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, FL. After restoration, it is hoped that 57039 will be displayed at the Glenview Naval Air Station Museum in Glenview, IL, where it was based at the time of its accident.

Wow! Frozen in time. This is the one they pulled up in Waukegan last year, right?

That's the one! I heard it was up for a "Most Original Warbird" award at Airventure.
