The two "dry" bits are last year's flower stalks, broken off near the tops (or I'd have included them).

I'm not sure what's eating them off; there are kangaroos ther, but more rabbits.
I also wonder about snails.
Friend checked them this week (ie one week later) and they are still buds ... I don't know how long till they bloom.
If a couple of weeks I could justify going over again.
Most of the ones in the open had their leaf nibbled; some almost back to the ground, but most still had the (later) flower stalk, so I don't understand it.
Maybe a group of kangaroos moved through a couple of weeks back and have not been back again?
