Things with wings
Things with wings mostly fly, but not everything. So there are some stone angels, and as well caterpillars and their eggs (which only notionally have wings). I've left out some stages, with people performing, though I know stages have wings, too. And some extended buildings.
You know: it could get kind of meaningless, hey?

A few moments later, the crow on the left had four peanuts in his
mouth, and he took off to eat them in privacy, away from the
paparazzo.
A hundredth of a second in a lucky blue jay's life
|
|
|
The blue jay had loaded up -- with a peanut in his craw and another in
his prow -- and, when I was ready to take his picture, he left.

I'll get tired of these armchair birding shots soon enough. But, in
the meantime, here is another picture taken through my back door
window. Each day, I put unshelled peanuts out and, within a few
minutes, the blue jays and crows come for their treats. Our cat and
the next-door neighbours' dogs pay rapt attention but the birds know
how safe they are.
Pacing
|
|
The crows have been getting friendlier since I've been feeding them
peanuts. This one was pacing around, wondering whether he should jump
down even closer to the door to get his peanuts. He did eventually;
nothing seems to put a crow off for very long.
Two crows
Easy Nutting

Two jays this morning. The fellow on the left was much more adept at
turning the nuts to get one down in his crop and a second in his beak
than the other fellow was.
Back for peanuts
|
|
Having learnt the bluejays are not using up the supply of peanuts, the
crows have been hanging out, waiting.
Hanging out in our yard

One of the neighbourhood crows, checking out the morning scene in our
backyard a few minutes ago.
This Tokina 300mm reflex lens gets close, and is very light-weight,
but it is soft.
Snowbird eating
|
|
When my neighbours left a month ago they asked if I wanted a birdbath.
I said "Sure." But, because of an outbreak of some bird diseases
here, I left it dry. This morning, I put some bird seed in it and
immediately attracted a couple of snowbirds.
Flicker getting out of sight

The flicker was checking the peanuts I had out for the bluejays.
When he saw me, he moved away. I never got a picture of him standing
still.
The peanuts were all gone. He just wanted me to kn…

I've been feeding this guy and his friends peanuts the past couple of
days. While I worked this morning, he cleared away this morning's
entire lot and then hung around reminding me to refill it.

Happy fly

I was on the back step listening to the radio and this fellow dropped
by to join me for a few minutes. He listened to the radio too and I
thought he was rubbing together with some glee his
what-pass-for-hands. Perhaps I was mistaken.

I must learn how to do focus-stacking with this camera.
Pine grosbeak gobbling up pisstabed seeds.

Pine grosbeak between feeds of pisstabed seeds in Ganny Cove
yesterday. She was jumping on the stalks of the, okay, dandelion
flowers, bringing them to the ground, and then, holding the flower
stalk down, picking at the seeds. You can see the remains of a lot of
seeds on the ground, bottom left. Her male buddy was around but he
wasn't as interested in the dandelions. He was bright orange.
I used to think all our native birds were grey or…

When I was a kid, I thought colourful birds were all in other places,
that all our birds were a kind of duckedimud colour. Nowaday I see
colourful birds all the time. Nothing has changed except my sight.
("None so blind...," hey?)
We spent the weekend out of town and noticed lots of high-saturation
birds, including this yellow warbler in the apple tree.
This is about a thirtieth of the entire frame.
Young starling
Fledgling starling startled into flight
|
|
I was going through a nearby, newly mown graveyard and saw a bunch of
starlings feeding in the cuttings with their fledglings. This one was
particularly pretty until finally I startled him and he flew.
This is substantially cropt . . . and, yes, I did desaturate the
bright green background. But his eye really did show blue (sky
reflection?).
