A blast from the past

A blast from the past
The pawnbrokers shop in Kirkgate

The famous Victorian street where the poorer people of York lived in the 1890's

More than 30 million people have visited this street, the oldest recreated street in the country. Dr John Kirk who was the founder of the museum had the idea that he wanted to create a street showing everyday life of the people of York. He rescued Victorian shop fronts from all over the country, and recreated them in the museum in 1938. Everything is real, right down to the packets of tea in the shops. If ever you are up that way, it is well worth a visit.
