Chester Cathedral

Chester Cathedral
In 1093 a Benedictine abbey, dedicated to Saint Werburgh, was established on the site by Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, and the earliest surviving parts of the structure date from that time..

During 1538, at the time of the dissolution, the monastery was disbanded and the shrine of Saint Werburgh was desecrated.

In 1541, on the orders of Henry Vlll, the abbey became a cathedral of the Church of England and the dedication was changed to that of Christ and the Blessed Virgin.

It is now a Grade l Listed Building, as are the former monastic buildings to the north - the whole is a Heritage Site.
