not my dog, i no longer have one... he belongs to my daughter - i met up with them when Spencer was out playing with his ball... he is a Whippet/Collie Lurcher and about 18 months of age...

The name Lurcher is a derived name from the Romany word lur, which means thief and is a crossbreed that is never bred to a specific standard but more often is three quarters sighthound to one quarter working dog - but can have any amount of sighthound.

The most common combinations are the Greyhound / Collie and the Greyhound / Terrier. Obviously the whippet crosses are smaller in size but can be just as deadly in hunting..
Under the Hunting Act (2004) it is now illegal to hunt wild mammals with dogs in Britain - though there are special exemptions...

Lurchers were developed by the Romanichals in England and other British countries during a period when hunting game was reserved for the landed classes.
The penalties for poaching were extremely severe, and greyhounds were the dogs of the aristocracy, so obviously a different dog was required. Any greyhound which did not belong to the ruling classes had the toes of it's front feet cut off - thereby making it useless for hunting..The cross-bred lurchers were used for poaching rabbits, hares and other small creatures..
The offspring of breeding sighthound to sighthound is known as a longdog...
