It's a long story. Kwan Yin was named ‪Avalokitasvara‬ in Indian Buddhist folklore. I understood him to be male. He became a ‪Bodhisattva‬, ie a Buddhist saint. The Chinese adopted him and gave him a sex and name change. At least, that's the way I understand it. You can follow the links and figure it out for yourself : ) BTW, these foreign names are often translated into English with many different spellings. 'Kwan Yin' is the one that I use. Wikipedia calls her ‪Guanyin‬
