St. Margaret of Antioch Church

St. Margaret of Antioch Church

This 12th-century parish church, with attractive arches and rounded doorways, towers above the village of St Margaret’s- at- Cliffe. It was built by the Priors of St Martins in Dover some time between 1140 and 1296. But what has always been a puzzle is why such a small village should have such a large church. Folklore also has it that when the area was popular with smugglers, the church tower was used by a parish clerk to store equipment needed to haul contraband up the nearby cliffs!

Saint Margaret of Antioch, also called Saint Marina, was a Syrian born Saint of the 3rd or 4th Century, who was one of the most venerated saints during the Middle Ages by many Churches including Roman Catholic, Church of England (as this one is) and Greek orthodox and Coptic Churches.

It is now a grade 1 listed building but unfortunately I could not get inside

MY THANKS TO ALL WHO VISIT AND COMMENT IT IS APPRECIATED

Brunot, Béatrice, Dimas Sequeira, Eunice Perkins and 11 other people have particularly liked this photo
