Grandma & Grandpa Bunker

Grandma & Grandpa Bunker
My mother's father, William Bunker, was from an old New England/Maine family who emigrated to Canada through Vermont in the 1800's and settled near Lake Simcoe. He worked as a machinist at a shop not far behind the house in Orillia, and had a severe head injury there late in his career.

Maude Willey, a gifted musician and singer, came to Canada on hope's of finding better circumstances for her working-class family in London, where her mother was a seamstress and her father drove a double-decker bus. Later they "came over" from England to live on the upper floor of the Gill Street house, where they were a peripheral part of my life. I still recall my great-grandfather lapsing into memories of the Boer War near the end of his life.

Grandma Bunker taught music to all her girls, and had her own orchestra during the Great Depression. When staying with her part of every summer, I remember all the high-spirited relationships of nearby cousins and aunts and uncles, and the music, and the backyard animals.
