Sinead O'Connor - "My Lagan Love"

This is a brilliant performance of the somewhat modern (1910's) lyrics by Joseph Campbell, set to a old northern Irish tune collected, I believe, by Edward J. Bunting of Belfast... choirmaster of St. George's Church in the Linen District, where my grandmother and her brother were both baptised.

The leinan sidhe in the song is an alluring woman of the gentry (the often invisible spell-binding folk) with an insatiable need for partnership... whose persistent magic tempts men to forget their regular life and to be constantly haunted by yearning for her until they leave human life behind.

"...she holds my heart in thrall" sings of this love-struck obsession with a particular woman - like that of a man captured in the spell of a leinan sidhe (pronounced "shee"), which takes away the writer's free will after love has completely seized him and captured all his waking attention.
