The Rice Paddy

Long-term irrigation project does not offer short-term political gain... because it requires years for the results of any irrigation project to be realised. Issan villages that face annual droughts and are dubbed "chronic drought-affected villages". Thus, the villagers are forced to wait desperately for money handouts (vote buyings) from politicians.

Many of the younger generation have decided to leave their farms to find jobs in the cities; they feel too insecure to continue on the land, because of the unpredictable nature of the weather year in year out.

... Is this year's weather condition any better? and what about next years?

Beautiful picture for a big problem. The weather conditions have always been a problem for farmers.

Great photo. I also like what you wrote. It is a huge problem especially when compounded with the conversion of land from growing food to growing fuel leading to exorbitant food prices and in some cases to dependence on importing food where once there was abundance of locally produced food. You raise a very good issue for us to ponder. Thank you.

We are now at a very early stage in Bio-fuel (ethanol) , some uses corn, cane or in thailand, we use Cassava roots (tapioca), cassava roots grows in very different type of soil condition, therefore its not a case of using existing rice paddies. but ultimately a case of competition for water, but the technology for processing using aggri-waste is also on the horizon.

The cheaper "Gasohol" that I use today is only a 10% mix of ethanol into standard 91 or 95 octane fuel. Soon, we'll use 100% ethanol.
