Ploughing of the field

.. There are two kinds of stories that we can tell about the food prices. One is an economic story, and that's a story about a perfect storm of poor harvests and a demand for meat in developing countries, which is diverting grain, and the high price of oil, which is driving up food -- farm inputs, and at the same time, the biofuels boom, the process of growing fuels in order -- sorry, growing food in order to burn it rather than eat it. All of these are economic factors that are driving up the price of food.

Thank you Kevin .. i'm still in the process of building the series, and to learn more about the situation ... the kid has an MP3 player in his pocket, his satellite TV at home can receive 68 channels from all over the world, and is most likely a fan of Man United football team ... but the rice he grows is controlled by law allowed only to be sold to the 10 appointed exporter ...

... Long-term irrigation project does not offer short-term political gain, because it requires years for the results to be realised. Some villages face annual droughts and are dubbed "chronic drought-affected villages". Thus, the villagers are forced to wait desperately for money handouts (vote buyings) from politicians. ... Many of the younger generation have decided to leave their farms to find jobs in the cities; they feel too insecure to continue on the land, because of the unpredictable nature of the weather year in year out ..

I was happy to read that the recent surge in petrol prices is causing farmers to replace thier tractors and return the water buffelo to the rice fields. This will require some OJT for farmers of the new generation.

Thank you David Ramsey, Thank you Midwesternstock,

Buffalos needs water, space and someone to look after them everyday, rice farming is heavy work, few months out of a year, its easier for the farmer to work on a construction site in the city and hire some machinery to plough his field. I

n case of homestead subsistence farming, most of the work is done by older women or childrens.

Thank you Jerry for the commentary on food and issues surrounding it. I do agree with you 100% regarding the conversion of land and of farming from the production of food toward the production of fuel: it is simply obscene.
