It's a wonderful building. I think I was there many years ago. Was it destroyed in a fire ?

It was one of the most palatial private houses in Europe at one time!
But by the 1920's it's greatness was over and it was sold. In 1937 there was a fire - although the fire was bad enough, it only affected part of the building. It was just before the war and the money was not there to repair the damage and in subsequent years it was ravaged by demolition contractors, vandals and neglect. In 1967 a local group began a successful campaign to save the baroque church and the Department of the Environment undertook the guardianship of the Court and grounds. It is now in the hands of English Heritage and they are slowly bringing the Court to life - making the building safe, renovating the gardens and maintaining the beautiful fountain.
