They would have a wood burning stove which would be going all the time, and of course they would have dressed for it.
Things were not as comfortable as they are now. We are very spoiled these days. :)
Notice how the house has trees on all three sides. This also protected the house from the cold prairie wind to help make living here a little more comfortable/tolerable.
I used to live in a log cabin about this size. It was the quaintest(is that a word?), place I've ever lived in. I lived there 3 yrs but the heating bill in the winter killed me. It was a rental property off the main house that was considered "historical" so the owners decided to keep it and rent it out.
I did too, but it had a wood burning furnace and stove in it, so it just required me to get enough wood to last the winters.
And quaintest is a word. :) It's quainter than other words. :)
