It seems like these motels in Canada are actually still used by people passing through on the way to somewhere else. I feel like I see a lot more poverty and shady characters in the small motels around here.

Chris there are a lot of trucks and transitory people moving across Canada on this particular highway so there is little use by locals. It's cheap accommodation for trades and truckers with the occasional transient car driver on a tight budget. No signs of poverty but the use factor means the units need regular upkeep or they get tired.

very many small motels in LA are prostitution marts. or other things. often if I photograph, people come out and want to know why.

I've had this happen when shooting this type of motel. I've been chased on a couple of occasions too. It's all part of the game.
