This Doric temple dedicated to the god of the sea Poseidon has been built from 444 B.C to 440 B.C on a Pericles order by the Architec who built also the Agora Thesseio; It replaces an archaic temple destroyed by Persians and is located on the last promontory towering above the Mediterranean sea. Ce temple d'ordre dorique dédié au dieu de la mer Poseïdon fut bâti de -444 à -440 sur ordre de Périclès par le même architecte que le Théseion d'Athènes. Il remplace un temple archaïque détruit par les Perses et a été construit sur le dernier cap dominant la mer Méditerranée.
