PICT16561dc Amiens Cathedral Notre Dame Majesty 1220
New visit not under the sun as in 2003 but under Spring storms and strong rain in 2007 while going to visit my family in the North of France; With sun or not, she is always of a great majesty! The town of Amiens has been proclamed Town of Art and History in 1992; Its cathedral, the largest gothic one of France has been classified World Heritage by UNESCO in 1981; It is a true technical performance, this older sister of Notre Dame of Paris was begun around 1220 and quite finished before the end of the century; This quick construction gives a lot of homogeinity to the building and makes of it the great jewel of gothic art; With its lenght of 145 meters, the central spire of 112 meters high, its vault of 42 meters and its volume of 200,000 cubic meters, the awesome cathedral is one of the highest and largest monument ever built in the middle age: Amiens cathedral called 'The Reference' or 'The French Parthenon by Viollet-le-Duc' could contain two times the Paris cathedral!!! She is on restoration until 2015 and has changed its black skin for a champagne one with its initial look, a pure wonder! We have taken more than 200 new pictures and I shall present the most interesting; France Picardie Region Somme Department Amiens Cathedral Notre Dame UNESCO World Heritage in 1981.

Thank you. I wonder if bells sound different when they are cold in the winter than when the weather is warmer.

I had seen this clip too! Amiens was my first discovered cathedral when I was ten years old!: We made a visit to an old lady, cousin of my mother, very boring for me! I wanted if I had the permission to go afoot to the imposing cathedral which was all black at that time! What a visual shock outside and still more inside with the large rosaces and with the shape of the mediaeval grand organ offered by king Louis IX (St Louis)! It is perhaps why I have always been attracted by these awesome monuments of the far past! Yes the sound may be a bit changed with the big difference of external temperatures between Winter and Summer! Thank You Carol!

Towers are finished but not symetrical; Do You know that this huge cathedral could engulf two times Notre Dame de Paris???? Look on other pictures, the roofs of the naves are quite as tall as the towers!!!! Thank You Manuel!
