Cast of one of the people who died at Pompeii. The casts were made by filling the vacancies left by the gradual disappearance of the soft tissues. About 100 casts were made in the 19th century but the practice was discontinued because it destroyed the skeletal remains. A few of these casts are still at Pompeii, most stored in a large open-sided shed.
