Der Teufel (von griechisch Διάβολος, Diábolos, wörtlich „der Durcheinanderwerfer“ im Sinne von „Verwirrer, Faktenverdreher, Verleumdner“; lateinisch Diábolus) wird in verschiedenen Religionen als eigenständiges Geistwesen angesehen.
Er spielt in der christlichen und der islamischen Theologie eine besondere Rolle als Personifizierung des Bösen.
Aus moderner Sicht handelt es sich um ein Fabelwesen aus der christlichen und islamischen Mythologie. Führende Kirchenlehrer, Päpste und Reformatoren charakterisieren ihn als real existierenden personalen Geist auch mit dem Namen Satan. Volkstümlich wird er in körperlicher Form als der Leibhaftige bezeichnet.
Im Buddhismus nimmt Devadatta die Stelle des Teufels ein; von ihm wird gesagt, dass er seit vielen tausend Wiedergeburten alles versucht habe, um dem Buddha Schaden zuzufügen.

The Devil is the title given to the supernatural being, who, in mainstream Christianity, Islam, and Abrahamic religious belief systems other than Judaism, is believed to be a powerful, evil entity and the tempter of humankind, a demonic personification, a rebellious fallen angel, minor god, or as an allegory for evil. Within Abrahamic religious belief systems other than Judaism, the Devil is commonly associated with heretics, infidels, and other unbelievers.
The name "Devil" derives from the Greek word diabolos, which means "slanderer" or "accuser".[1] The Hebrew Bible does not assign any level of personification to the title Ha-Satan; there, this title is applied to different angels. The angel, which holds the title Satan (=Adversary) is a servant of God in his heavenly court and is given sometimes the job to test humankind.
In mainstream Christianity, God and the Devil are usually portrayed as fighting over the souls of humans, with the Devil seeking to lure people away from God and into Sheol. The Devil commands a force of lesser evil spirits, traditionally named as demons.
This entity is commonly referred to by a variety of names, including Abbadon, Angra Mainyu, Satan, Asmodai, Beelzebub, Lucifer, Belial, and Iblis. Many other religions have a trickster or tempter figure that is similar to the Devil. Modern conceptions of the Devil include the concept that it symbolizes humans' own lower nature or sinfulness.
People of the regions of the world, influenced by Christianity or islam, put the concept of the Devil to use in social and political conflicts, claiming that their opponents are influenced by the Devil or even willingly supporting the Devil. The Devil has also been used within Abrahamic religious belief systems other than Judaism to explain why others hold beliefs that are considered to be false and ungodly.
