What an amazing place. And our ability (well, your ability) to reproduce such objects into our current digital world is quite telling of our current state. But ah to have a sanctuary. This makes me want to create at least one small spot of sanctuary in my home. It's very cool that people are visible here heading into the sanctuary - not a usual thing in photos like this.

How did you reproduce this? Did you place it on a light table? I really don't know and am very interested.

And where did you come by this glass plate? And what made you choose this for our event?

Happy (belated) World Photography Day!

This sanctuary is one of the most important in the country. It is located in a beautiful valley in the Pyrenees two thousand metres above sea level, surrounded by such mountains as Puigmal and Noucreus. It can be accessed by means of the rack train, opened in 1931.
The sanctuary is presided by a neo-Romanesque church, consecrated in 1911. Next to it we find a hotel and four houses dedicated to the saints Jeroni, Antoni, Josep and Gil. On the right hand side of the plain in front of the sanctuary lies the Sant Gil chapel, built in 1615 and subsequently extended. The nearby Sant Gil spring, famous for its frozen waters, is next to the lake.
Legend has it that Sant Gil, penitent, came to Núria around the year 700 and hid there the image of the Mare de Déu (Mother of God), a polychrome carving of great beauty, along with other tool such as a cross, a bell and a pot, exhibited objects which were found in 1079 by a pilgrim called Amadeu that came from Dalmatia.
This is how the sanctuary´s long history begins, which began as a parish for mountain shepherds to pray in, and that throughout the centuries became a hospital, a hostel, a place of pilgrimage.
The compound includes, naturally, a series of services which make it an ideal place for tourism. Apart from the hotel, the hostel and the catering areas, there is a family ski resort, climbing activities all year long, excursions, archery and horse riding trips.
The photograph is from the family fund. It was taken by my great-grandfather with a Jules Richard stereoscopic camera around 1915. So it's part of a couple of photos that I admired as a child with a 3D stereoscopic viewer. My great-grandfather was a pioneer of photography in my country, Catalonia, at the beginning of the twentieth century. My love of photography (and the mountains) started just by seeing these photos.
The reproduction is done, indeed, with a small light table, and with the help of a tripod. After the camera raw file I treated it with Photoshop respecting the original color, but cleaning up some too visible defects.
I chose this photo because I visit the sanctuary often (I live very close to it for a good part of the year), and it is the base for good hikes and walks. And because I wanted to honor the pioneers of photography who tell us our own history.
Now, it's very easy for us to take a picture. It's about pressing a button, or touching the screen of our mobile phone, but at that time, you had to prepare all the materials, cut the glass, prepare the emulsion, make the exposure (always long and with a tripod) ) and then reveal in the own laboratory. Each photograph had two stories. The content of the image and all the work of elaboration. I'm not a fan of celebrating any international day of any kind, but in this case I thought I'd make an exception by honoring a pioneer. And who better than the person who instilled in me a love for photography in a place I love, also because my mother is called Núria.

It is wonderful to have a family history of photgraphy, don't you think? I have some of that as well. My grandfather was one of the vice presidents of Kodak. He passed his love of photography onto my mother who passed it on to me.
