Squibbing

Squibbing
Please View in large..........
These fireworks know locally as Squibbs are unique to Bridgwater Carnival. www.bridgwatercarnival.org.uk
The Squibs are attached to a block on the end of a long pole ( known as a cosh) which when lit from a flame in the road are held above the head, Between 150 and 200 people take part in the event which stretches the length of the High street.
This image shows a part of around 60 people who took part in the Christmas lights switch on.

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Christiane ♥.•*¨`*•✿
Thank you Christiane, the tradition possible goes back to the 1600's but in 1716 a local squib manufacturer was killed by an explosion in his factory so we know it was in existence at that time.

Although my home was only 6 miles north of Bridgey, I was usually away at school when the Carnival season was on. The floats go to several other carnivals in the area, but without the squibs. My recollection of the only time I did get there was that it was one long pub crawl, wandering along the carnival route with a glass in hand, getting refills along the way!
I doubt the squibbers wore hard hats back then in the late 60s. Thanks for the recollection therapy, Roger!

 Roger (Grisly)
Roger (Grisly) club
I squibed in the 60s in an old cloth cap that was being thrown away and a scarf wrapped tightly around the neck, The squibs were much more volatile and unreliable in those days but thankfully today's homogenised versions are much safer,
Carts still tour the county however results seldom change very much after Bridgwater,

A great shot of this unusual custom, Roger. I'm afraid it would never be accepted here because of the fire risk, which I guess also accounts for the safety helmets in your image.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to tiabunna club
Thank you George, Goggles, a good scarf tight around the neck and a helmet which is fire proof are essential attire, in my day which was before safety equipment you bought a second hand cap to wear and threw it away complete with burn holes after the event, at the last event over 400 squibbers took part including our local mp,

My daughter who took part a few years back used and now has my Squib Cosh just to ensure it stays in the family.

Sadly so Maurice, I started in this carnival in 1972 and last year was the only one since then that I have not been involved with. I banked on stopping when I had done 50 years but that may take a year or two longer now.
