The Filmhaus

The Filmhaus
CALIGARI (1919/20)

Director: Robert Wiene
Author: Carl Mayer, based on an idea by Hans Janowitz
Camera: Willy Hameister
Actors: Conrad Veidt, Werner Krauss, Lil Dagover, Friedrich Feher, Hans Heinrich von Twardowski

A first myth. Perhaps the most famous German work of the Weimar Republic. Its graphic style has become a synonym for an era of strife. The locations – a small town, a fun fair and an insane asylum – all painted on canvas. Werner Krauss as Caligari, Conrad Veidt as the somnambulist Cesare, Lil Dagover as Jane. The Filmmuseum Berlin possesses the only surviving script from Werner Krauss’ estate. An atelier model made by set designer Herman Warm illustrates how the film was shot.
