Old City Hall, Toronto

Old City Hall, Toronto
The west elevation of Old City Hall (a description of which is provided with the previous shot) seen from Nathan Phillips Square. I once saw a tourist bus park on Queen Street in front of New City Hall (out of shot to the left); the first thing every person who got out of the bus did, however, was take some photos of Old City Hall.

I have a winter version of this shot, with the pond transformed into a skating rink, that will no doubt appear eventually. It's summer now, though, so I took a new one today.

Looks a little bit like Frankfurt: the different architectural styles side by side, the tourists taking pictures in the city. Nicely composed, John

What a contrast it makes to all the new buildings. Officialdom's need to destroy history also applies far too often here I'm afraid.

I recall Bill Bryson saying in one of his books that the 70s were the decade in which British cities decided to destroy all their nice buildings.

Toronto's policy was well intended, but the problem was that the city had no idea what good architecture was. And it still doesn't. Some of the buildings they approve are mind-boggling.

A superb pair of images of this beautiful old building and how wonderful that people-power caused it to be saved from destruction.

I think it holds it's own very well among the more modern (and less beautiful) buildings!

It's a stunner, Keith, and that's why people wanted to save it. Even filthy it was impressive.

The skyscrapers renders the clock tower absurd...LOL!

City Hall used to dominate downtown, Denis, but they didn't have the sense to make its new taller members sympathetic. They have also allowed a high-rise hotel to project above the roofline of the provincial legislature from behind.
