Ecole coranique, joyau de l'architecture saadienne, réhabilitée par Abdallah el-Ghalib, sultan saadien, en 1564-65.
Qur'anic school, a jewel of Saadian architecture, rehabilitated by Abdallah el-Ghalib, Saadian Sultan, in 1564-65.

Its name is inspired by the sultan Ali Ben Youssef (1083-1143), Berber dynasty of the Almoravids, who ruled for 37 years from the Maghreb to Andalusia and over West Africa.
The medersa was founded by Abu al-Hasan ben Uthman, a Merinid sultan, around 1350, near the Ben Youssef mosque, which inspired its name :
Mosquée Ben Youssef, Marrakech. Haut Atlas en arrière plan.

Its plan is square and it has two floors. The walls are made of clay bricks, entirely hidden by plaster and decoration. Two galleries [PiPs #1 & 2] run the length of the south and north sides, opening onto the courtyard under five arches each. Opposite the entrance door is the prayer hall, which consists of three naves delimited by marble pillars supporting arches with facades chiselled with ornamental motifs. 132 rooms could each accommodate one or two students.
The whole building is punctuated with mosaics representing very colourful geometric motifs and following well-coded rules. They are the result of an ancestral and virtuoso craftsmanship.

Fascinating culture, indeed, like so many ancestral ones that founded ours - the ours's, what we so easily forget today through the rewriting of history that drains "modern" culture...
