Because of its mirror surface, this sculpture has an aspect that depends on its environment. The room of this museum is certainly not the best reflection one can hope for, but it allowed me this kind of "illumination" of the lower right quarter of the face, giving it an expression of increased pain (perhaps irrelevant? ;-)
Du fait de sa surface en miroir, cette sculpture revêt un aspect qui dépend de son environnement. La salle de ce musée n'est certes pas le meilleur reflet que l'on puisse espérer, mais elle m'a permis cette sorte de "mise en lumière" du quart inférieur droit du visage, lui conférant une expression de douleur accrue (peut-être hors de propos ? ;-)

This sculpture is a portrait of Margit Pogany, a Hungarian artist who sat for Brancusi several times in 1910 and 1911 while she was in Paris studying painting. Shortly after her return to Hungary, Brancusi carved a marble Mlle Pogany from memory, then made a plaster mold of the work, from which he cast four additional versions, including this one, in bronze. In representing its subject through highly stylized and simplified forms, the work was a significant departure from conventional portraiture. Large almond-shaped eyes overwhelm the oval face, and a black patina represents the hair that covers the top of the head and extends over the elaborate chignon at the nape of the neck. As with other motifs, this was a subject Brancusi would return to and rework in the years to come.

Cette sculpture est un portrait de Margit Pogany, une artiste hongroise qui a représenté Brancusi à plusieurs reprises en 1910 et 1911 alors qu'elle était à Paris pour étudier la peinture. Peu après son retour en Hongrie, Brancusi sculpta de mémoire une Mlle Pogany en marbre, puis en fit un moule en plâtre, à partir duquel il coula quatre autres versions, dont celle-ci, en bronze. En représentant son sujet sous des formes très stylisées et simplifiées, l'œuvre s'éloignait considérablement du portrait conventionnel. De grands yeux en forme d'amande envahissent le visage ovale, et une patine noire représente les cheveux qui couvrent le sommet de la tête et s'étendent sur le chignon élaboré à la nuque. Comme avec d'autres motifs, c'était un sujet sur lequel Brancusi reviendrait et retravaillerait dans les années à venir.
