Sunset Pacific Motel

Sunset Pacific Motel

The defunct motel (previously known for gang activity, drug dealing and prostitution) always looks it's best, and in-character, late at night. The Los Angeles City Council voted to shut it down (on March 13, 2002) and the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners (on September 22, 2009) declared it a public nuisance (allowing for its demolition). Even Police Chief Bratton supported tearing it down. But as of June 2012 it's still holding on. In a way, there's something rather admirable about that kind of tenacity. Defying everyone.

There have been several attempts to replace it with any number (and configuration) of upscale venues (the idea being that only "upscale" clientele can possibly save this block of Sunset Blvd.). And that will probably happen (since nearby buildings are being razed for 3 separate luxury condominium projects). But I will always prefer to remember this motel as the place where, on May 28, 1991, Rodney King was picked up by Los Angeles Police for soliciting a transvestite prostitute. Frankly what could possibly, more accurately, depict the bohemian character of the Silver Lake community than that? Certainly not a day spa, trendy restaurant, high end hotel or upscale lounge. The existence of the Sunset Pacific helps keep our pretentiousness in check.
