General Telephone

General Telephone
A telephone central office building in Desert Center, California. Even though General Telephone merged with Bell Atlantic (in June, 2000) to create Verizon Communications, this building still retains the old signage and logo. Although unlikely, it may no longer be a functioning facility as there is a more modern, microwave-linked building 2⅓ miles (3¾ km) north of this one on Parkview Drive. The fence, the condition of the building and the existence of the radio tower suggest that the location still has some function.

The antennae appear to be quite directional and receiving very short wavelengths from the west (and possibly all four antennas are ganged to act as one to send/receive a weak signal). But what's west of here? The Cactus City truck stop, 32.5 miles (52.3 km) away? Or perhaps a cell site?
