Bole Hill Plantation view to south-west

Bole Hill Plantation view to south-west
Limb Valley Bole Hill lead smelting site

A view from the high and exposed western extremity of Bole Hill Plantation looking south-west over the Limb Valley, with the prominent coniferous Lady Canning's Plantation on the skyline.

There are many 'Bole Hills' in Sheffield and along the west-facing sandstone and gritstone escarpments of the Eastern Edges. Their elevated locations were ideal for wind-blown furnaces ('boles') for smelting lead ore which was brought in by pack-horses from the Peak District mines further to the west.

Thank you Roger! We are just over 1000 ft elevation here, so a good view all round. Good for medieval lead smelting too!
