I think a male Shelduck, Confirmation ID would be appreciated. Taken at Welney Wetlands after the storm.

Roger Dodger, Rosalyn Hilborne, Sarah O', Marie-claire Gallet and 6 other people have particularly liked this photo

It looks like a shelduck to me Maurice but I don't know the difference between male and female ducks. My reserve has been very quiet for birds this week. I hope it improves soon.

Thank you Steve, Not much going on at Welney either. Female has a brown head and neck as far as I know. I do miss my 600mm but it was just to heavy to carry around, this is 300mm with at least 50% crop. Olympus are about to release a 100-400mm for my camera and I am very interested as it will give the 4/3rds system 800mm at 35mm equivalent and at half the weight of the old 600mm.

I think what you have here is a female Common Shelduck.

The beak of the male is red with a conspicuous knob on the on the upper base. I can't see that in this shot.

A love shot though Maurice........the light is lovely and I like the detail in the feathers and the ripples on the water.

I like the sound of the 100-400 lens as well, but it's very expensive and quite a slow lens. There is supposed to be a Pro version of it coming out at some stage, but that will be even more expensive. I'm hoping that if people like it, they may start selling off their 300mm f4 lenses cheaply :-)))

Thanks for that Keith, Senior moment I think, I did know this was a female, I think it was because some woman in the hide was trying to tell her granddaughter it was a "Pintail" I impolitely butted in and said wrongly it was a male Shelduck, of course as you have said the Male just like a swan does have a prominent blackberry but male just stuck in my mind.

A lovely shot Maurice. The detail on the duck is superb and the ever decreasing circles in the water look great.
