In days gone by when deliveries to pubs were by horse and cart it's hard to imagine the effort that goes into each delivery. A barrel of beer is 36 gallons, deliveries were in Barrels, Kilderkin (18 Gallons) and Firkins (9 Gallons). a fully loaded dray could be 360 gallons plus two Draymen. Firkins would be hand loaded but Kilderkins and Barrels had to be loaded by Rope and ladder (Ramp) and delivery into the pub cellar would be by dropping the barrels onto cushions beneath the cellar doors.
In General a Draft horse (Dray horse) used by the Breweries would be the British Shire horse bred for it's strength and docile aptitude, other breeds were employed and for the larger horse drawn dray the shire horse would be paired to haul the delivery.
Some breweries still maintain a dray horse and cart mainly for ceremonial and festive reasons but the general use of the dray horse declined in the early 1960's.
(Sorry about the slight Jaundice look in the picture, the whites are blown out and the white balance Picker tool in Elements software does not fully correct the colour cast.)
