Hop Picking Yalding Kent circa 1935

Hop Picking Yalding Kent circa 1935
Old family portrait about 1935. Hop picking was until the 1960s a vacation for family's living in London who would spend their holiday earning extra money hop picking on the Kentish Hop farms. This photograph is a photograph of the original. Bearing in mind I am now 68 the photo features my Mother, Uncle & Grandmother.

Oh my, how times have changed.
Or have they?
It's puzzling to imagine how life was like in 1935.
How will people in 2093 imagine life was like in 2014?
Cheers my friend :-)

Well it's a question I have always pondered, My guess is that life as we know it will have turned full circle, with fossil fuel starting to run out, and medicines that no longer work, mankinds influence on global warming will be less of a threat and Oh my Goodness! technology has outrun all our wonderful digital photographs of today and will be lost forever.

a beautiful image of times gone by...
it was usually the poorer families who spent time hop-picking - or any other seasonal fruit/flower/veg picking - yet look how this family is dressed... "Grandmother" wearing a hat and the young "Uncle" wearing a waistcoat...

I remember people talking of Kentish holidays picking Hops, I remember too people including myself visiting Kent to collect Cobb nuts.

I would have been about 1 year old when this photo was taken.

Thank you John for your visit, The Kentish brewers Shepherd Neame are still in business but I really don't know how the Kentish Hop growing industry is these days. Luckily I am a bit of a Carlsberg fan and I think that Brewery is a near neighbour of yours.
