Updated 1/4/2016: A public lands dispute in the Burns, Oregon area has resulted in a private militia takeover of a BLM building at Malheur and the BLM has currently shut the offices in the area.

From the Buena Vista overlook of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The mountain in the far distance is Steens Mountain. I have twice now been in the area and planned to drive the Steens Mountain Scenic byway, but unable to do it because of the upper reaches being snow covered.

I only spent one night there, but Mountain Home surprised me. Compared to many rural small towns, the city center was relatively well-maintained and had thriving businesses. There were also a surprising number of well-preserved older buildings around town, including the one shown here.
