Petaluma SMART train (#0994)
One of the trains for the new Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit system that will soon begin running. This was a test train, the photo is taken from a nature preserve opposite the SMART tracks; the highway above the train is the 101.
SMART will run along the right-of-way of the former Northwestern Pacific Railroad. The plans are for the trains to run from Cloverdale to the Larkspur ferry landing, where passengers will transfer to ferries to SF. In 2016 a segment from Santa Rosa to San Rafael (43 miles) will open, providing some relief for commuters on “the 101” (SoCal speak for US 101). The portion from San Rafael to Larkspur is expensive to construct, thus the delay in that segment. Until that portion is constructed, passengers will be able to transfer to SF commuter buses in San Rafael.
Updated 08/17: The rail cars are built in the U.S. by a Japanese company to specifications for SMART; they are self-propelled diesel.

Don Barrett (aka DBs… club has replied to kiiti clubThe metro Chicago area has the problem of commuter trains sharing the freight tracks. It often causes major headaches for rush hour.
