UP Jungo Rd Winnemucca NV (2144)

UP Jungo Rd Winnemucca NV (2144)
Along Jungo road, a graded gravel road that runs west from Winnemucca towards Gerlach.

I had been on the Jungo road for about an hour and, despite that fact that it is parallel to UP tracks, I had not seen or heard a train for the entire time. Soon, though, four trains came through relatively close to each other.

This, of course, is the old Western Pacific/Feather River route, now also part of the UP. I find it ironic that this line was the last transcontinental route built and is still in use! So many have been torn up, especially in the northwest.

That amazes me too, particularly this one since it's a more indirect route to the west coast ports, though I suspect it is less of a climb than the route through Reno/Truckee.

IIRC the lower pass into the Feather River drainage was the motivation for the route--not just less of a grade, but less weather too. Of course, the latter is less of an issue these days, because the Donner Pass route is pretty much continuous snow sheds at this point.

One thing I like about Nevada is that the distances are so vast that you can see a train a great distance off, and they look like tiny little things. Nevada is a life-size model train set.

You're right, from some angles it does look like a model train set!
