Walnut Canyon National Monument (1591)

Walnut Canyon National Monument (1591)
Sign describing Walnut Canyon cliff dwellings near Flagstaff, AZ. The satellite view is quite helpful in understanding the location. In the satellite view you'll see that Walnut Creek makes a circular loop and that the inside of that loop is almost an island (see the picture in the sign). Circumnavigating that island is the Island Trail which connects multiple accessible cliff dwellings; on the outer edges of the loop (across Walnut Creek) are many more cliff dwellings that are not easily accessible. Per the sign, the ruins here were home for somewhere between 75 and 400 people around 1100 CE (AD)

We missed all the national monuments when we passed through Flagstaff in 2013. I had it in my head that we'd take an alternate route down from the Grand Canyon back to Flagstaff and stop at Sunset Crater and Wupatki, but that route was closed when we went through there. And I didn't know enough about Walnut Canyon to want to go until later. It looks like a neat place.

Not too surprisingly, both this and Walnut Canyon get overshadowed by the Grand Canyon and by some other Indian cliff dwellings that are more dramatic. Not too many people seem to know about either of these places.
