I have vague memories of a movie (maybe a Disney film) about this when I was a kid. I wonder how long the camels lasted.

Per Wikipedia, the move was Hawmps! and many of the camels were sold to private citizens, so there's no record of how long they lived. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Camel_Corps

Ah! It's from the same people who did the Benji movies, which is probably why I watched it. I had a deep obsession with the Benji movies.
