Description of US 99 on a mural in Indio memoralizing 99's presence in Indio. I was surprised to see this mural since US 99 (now most of CA-99) was a north-south route. Per Wikipedia's article on CA-99, prior to the interstates, the highway running east from LA to the Coachella Valley and then south to El Centro was US-99 (now I-10 and CA-86). The mural is part of the Historic Mural Project, an effort to stimulate revitalization of downtown Indio.
