Lots of ravens and raptors up there, including one turkey vulture that got fairly close.

It's the same in this area and the Black Eagle-Wambli Sapa-Turkey Vulture is a favorite. Lakota legends tell the story of a boy who was raised in the nest of a Black Eagle, but one day his village returned to the valley below and he wanted to return to his own people, so he tied one of his Black Eagle Brothers to each of his wrists and jumped out of the nest so they could fly him down to the village. When he got down there, to show his appreciation to them, he painted their heads the sacred red color, and from then on all the Black Eagles had red heads.
