Mt Hamilton Lick Observatory (0552)

Mt Hamilton Lick Observatory (0552)
The largest dome at the older portion of the observatory. The numbers over the door are the year the dome was built, which was 1875.

It seems so hi-tech and modern, but when you look at the date and think about it, at that time Custer and his 7th Cavalry hadn't got to the Little Big Horn yet. And Wild Bill Hickok was about to be dealt his last hand of aces and eights in Deadwood.

I didn't think of putting that time frame on it, it really does make you appreciate the age of the facility (and the technology) when you put it in that context.

It is interesting when you think about it. Scientists viewing the rings of Saturn here, and only a few hundred miles away nomadic Indian tribes are fighting off the Cavalry.

Well..... with employment being as bad as it is in the Central Valley, we may be back to that.

It's just that there's too many people, but take heart, my daughter the Bio-scientist tells me it's only a matter of time before it becomes less populous. Because of the overuse of antibiotics, and anti-bacterial cleaning products, the human race is in for a real good culling as the germs follow Darwin's Survival of the Fittest rule. Less people=less problems.

Thanks. Just discovered your group and like the focus -- have many interesting older pictures that I'll get around to adding over time.
