Santa Fe Dam, a flood control dam built by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1949. Note the joggers on the top of the dam -- it was surprising the number of people out jogging on Christmas day.

I should find a way to document them more. The LA area is a basin, so every drainage from the surrounding mountains needs some sort of control. Very many are earthen dams and levees, which people seem to glaze over as natural parts of the landscape.
