"Abandoned yacht club" seems sort of surreal. Too little water? Did they run out of money and have to sell the yachts? Did the area become unattractive to the moneyed class? Or what?

All of the above. The Salton Sea is a sink with no outlet that has quite a bit of variation in depth and salinity (and dead fish and odor). Hollywood discovered it in the 50's as cars and highways got better, but then planes got cheaper and there were periods of flooding, so there went the popularity of the Salton Sea.
